Direct conversion vs cost-of-living
The direct conversion simply changes your salary into the other currency at today's rate. The cost-of-living equivalent goes further: it scales that figure by the relative price level between the two places, so you can see what income keeps your purchasing power the same. Moving somewhere cheaper means you need less; somewhere pricier means you need more.
About the cost-of-living index
We use an approximate cost-of-living index (United States = 100) covering major economies. It's a broad guide for comparison, not a precise, city-level figure — actual costs vary a lot within each country and by lifestyle.
